The MWH Soft Best Innovation Awards are judged by a panel of industry experts and presented during the MWH Soft User Conference. They recognize the most innovative modeling and engineering advancements made by the extensive community of customers who use MWH Soft software, the industry-leading choice for comprehensive water and wastewater systems management. Winners are chosen for engineering excellence and ground breaking innovation.

The awards honor the exceptional work of MWH Soft users toward advancing the state of the art in hydraulic infrastructure planning, design, optimization, operations, and management. These projects set benchmarks for their industries and showcase the creativity and technical mastery of the organizations that created them. MWH Soft established the competitive award program in 2002. Among the many progressive organizations that have received the award are the Las Vegas Valley Water District, Nevada, and Denver Water, Colorado.

For 2006, the Butler County Department of Environmental Services, Ohio (BCDES) and the Regional Municipality of Durham, Ontario, Canada, were the recipients of this prestigious honor. The award categories were master planning and integrated energy management.

BCDES won the award for leveraging the power of advanced hydraulic and water quality modeling and GIS applications as well as genetic algorithm optimization in distribution system master planning to develop sound and reliable design and improvement solutions at maximum cost savings. The Regional Municipality of Durham expertly deployed advanced hydraulic and water quality modeling and GIS applications, as well as genetic algorithm optimization and demand forecasting, in conducting distribution system operational studies to identify the most energy-efficient and cost-effective pump scheduling policies for maximum system performance and energy savings.

Congratulations to both organizations. They have demonstrated the highest standards of water distribution modeling excellence.

MWH Soft introduced six new groundbreaking engineering textbooks that cover everything students, professional engineers, managers, modelers, health department officials, government agencies, consultants, researchers and GIS professionals need to know about modeling treatment plant hydraulics as well as water distribution and sewer collection systems

"Comprehensive Water Distribution Systems Analysis Handbook for Engineers and Planners," addresses how to reliably construct, load, and calibrate systems and use rigorous network models to optimize system planning, design, and complex operational activities. Topics range from in-depth coverage of basic network flow theory and dynamic water quality assessment to sophisticated transient flow and pressure calculations.

"Comprehensive Sewer Collection Systems Analysis Handbook for Engineers and Planners," addresses how to construct and calibrate reliable sewer (sanitary, storm and combined) collection system models. Topics range from basic open channel flow theory and sophisticated rainfall-runoff modeling to dynamic (unsteady) routing. The in-depth volume even includes detailed descriptions of how to simulate hydrogen sulfide generation, degradation and release in both gravity and pressure mains; rates of microbially-induced corrosion; sediment transport and deposition; time of concentration; biochemical oxygen demand; pollutant loading, transport and buildup; and tracing of domestic, commercial and industrial contributions.

"Pressure Wave Analysis of Transient Flow in Pipe Distribution Systems," addresses how to model and control hydraulic transients in large and complex piping systems. It builds on basic hydraulic theory to give engineers the confidence to solve their own transient flow problems. The text is supported by extensive computer graphical tools that illustrate pressure wave actions at various network components, greatly enhancing the reader's visualization and understanding of transient pipe flow. Once these concepts are understood, the reader should be able to adapt them to any piping system in any particular situation.

"Comprehensive Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Hydraulics Handbook for Engineers and Operators," addresses both the practical and theoretical aspects of treatment plant hydraulics. It brings together the principles of proper hydraulic analysis and design and characterization of treatment facilities, and presents them in a manner that can be easily understood. The book is an invaluable reference for the study and practice of treatment plant design.

"Comprehensive Handbook on Water Quality Analysis for Distribution Systems," addresses both the theoretical and practical information needed to conduct crucial water quality simulations in pipes, at junctions, within reservoirs and storage tanks, and in complex networks. It provides a comprehensive overview of distribution system water quality modeling, from steady state equilibrium to more sophisticated dynamic analysis techniques and reaction kinetics, encompassing transformations that occur in the bulk water phase, at the pipe wall, and within storage facilities.

"Comprehensive Urban Hydrologic Modeling Handbook for Engineers and Planners," covers both the practical and theoretical aspects of urban hydrology, hydraulics, and storm water quality modeling. The book brings together the principles and tools available for evaluating the quantity and quality of storm water, and presents them in a manner that can be easily understood. Moreover, it provides guidance on methods of managing and controlling storm water in the urban environment.

Focused on bridging the gap between advanced theory and practical application, these state-of-the-art books include over 500 worked out example problems, detailed hydraulic principles, and step-by-step guidance that walks readers through the complete modeling/design process from start to successful finish and interpretation of results.

These all-in-one reference textbooks are absolutely invaluable guides for review of PE exams and full of practical information on emerging technology.

Applications Are Now Invited from Outstanding University Professors/Researchers

MWH Soft Awards Committee is now seeking applications from university professors for its 2006 Excellence in Engineering Education Award Program. Educational software grants (H2OMAP Water/InfoWater and/or H2OMAP Sewer Pro/InfoSewer Pro) are available for universities for use in teaching and research to train civil, water resources, and environmental engineering students on the latest geospatial analysis tools for geoengineering of water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems.

The program recognizes outstanding engineering professors and researchers who have established aggressive, high quality water resources design and management programs in their respective universities by equipping their civil and environmental engineering students with the latest advances in network modeling and optimization technology for water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems. To date, MWH Soft has awarded over $1.7 million in software to 34 universities in 14 countries through this widely acclaimed program.

The merit-based Excellence in Engineering Education Award program offers universities the tools they need to teach their students using state-of-the-art technology and prepare them for rewarding professional careers. It gives students who are interested in the field of environmental and water resources engineering the opportunity to train on the sophisticated technology used by leading water and wastewater utilities and consulting engineering companies on a daily basis.

MWH Soft awards these prestigious and competitive educational/research grants based on both the excellence in teaching and research accomplishments of individual professors and their institutions.

Outstanding university professors/researchers with excellent water resources programs are invited to submit their applications for consideration by the Awards Committee at the earliest possible date, as these grants are limited and will be awarded strictly on a competitive basis. Applicants should submit a complete resume along with a short description (limited to two pages) of proposed educational course work/syllabus in water and sewer system modeling, program strength, computer facilities, and required course materials.
